The harrow was originally an agricultural tool for breaking up and smoothing out the surface of the soil.  It is used in sports pitch construction to cultivate the surface: to break up lumps of soil and to provide a finer finish, a good tilth or soil structure that is suitable for planting seed or laying turf.  The power harrow can also be used to remove weeds and cover the seed once it has been sowed.
